First time I ever saw a Red Spotted Purple (Limenitis arthemis) was earlier this month in Gainesville, Florida. Stopped by a Publix to get my sister and dad some snacks while they were fencing at a fencing tournament. This fellow was mud puddling, basically sucking the nutrients out of mud, in the parking lot. I had to take a picture. thank goodness the parking lot wasn't too busy. Males mud puddle to collect vital nutrients. Sometimes they pass the salts and other goodies to the female during mating to help with the formation of eggs.
