Unlike other aquatic birds, Anhingas lack the oils to waterproof their feathers. So they have to bask to dry out before they can fly after a dive. They are also called snakebirds, since they're swim with just their head and neck sticking out of the water. Basically they're a freshwater version of cormorants.
****EDIT****
I'M SO EXCITED. I never thought I would get a Daily Deviation!!!! Thanks for all the support, favorites, and comments. A big thanks to PirateLotus Stock for the suggestion. I'd thank ya'll individually, but I tried and DA thought I was a spambot -_-.
this is a beautiful shot of a beautiful bird, i just wanted to ask if it was a cormorant when i read your comment, so cool... thank you for pointing out with their missing waterproof, we have cormorants around the corner here and my little daughter spotted a lot of them sitting in the trees with their wings spread... so next time we'll be out on a walk at that place i can tell her why they do that...
i came here through "more like this" and i just see you got a DD for this - bravo and belated congrats...
